DC announces streaming service DC Universe for comics, films, TV show

DC is giving fans access to its movies, exclusive TV shows and comics through its own streaming service, out late fall.

DC Comics will launch its own streaming service – DC Universe – in September, giving fans access to its library of TV, films and comics.

The American comic book publisher says its platform is intended to be a single stop for fans that also serves as an encyclopedia, and a place for fans to discuss their favourite characters and stories.

According to The Verge, DC reps say the existing social media platforms haven’t been great at fostering a unified meeting point for its fandom.

Subscribers who pre-order will get an additional three months for free.

In addition to existing properties, DC will be working with Warner Bros Television to bring five original shows to the platform, including live action series Titans, Doom Patrol, and Swamp Thing, as well as animated series Young Justice: Outsiders and Harley Quinn.

The service will also provide a select offering of 2,000 to 3,000 titles, which can be read on a phone, tablet, or television.

During a press briefing attended by The Verge, DC representatives demonstrated the feature and noted that reading a comic book on a television screen could make the solitary activity into something more social.

As for the social aspect, DC says it is still being worked out but may include discussion forums, the ability to create and share lists of favourites, news sections, encyclopaedia entries, and trending publications.

The fan forums will be moderated to discourage abusive and toxic behaviour.

According to DC’s website, the service will only be available in the United States at launch, but will be rolled out to more territories.
